However, Dr. Matt Walker the author of Why We Sleep has comments on this phenomena with supplements and substances. When you consistently have crappy sleep, you'll go into a REM deficit and when you finally do sleep well, your body wants to make up for all of the sleep you weren't getting. It can't, but it tries. During this more intense, deeper REM sleep you're going to remember your dreams or have them more vividly.
