Dastan (or Dastaan), 1950 Director: A.R. Kardar Music Director: Naushad Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni Playback: Suraiya, Mohammad Rafi Choreography: Krishna Kumar Cast: Raj Kapoor, Suraiya, Murad, Al Nasir, Veena, Suresh, Pratima Devi, S.N. Banerjee, Shakila, Laxman, Surendra, Anwari, Krishna Kumar English translation provided. Dastan was the third higest grossing film of 1950, behind Samadhi and Babul, and ahead of Jogan, Sangram, and Beqasoor. Each of the other films is featured in this channel. The Encyclopedia Of Indian Cinema says this about Dastan: Melodrama told in flashback about the sexually repressed Rani (Veena) whose life is caught between two historical moments and ends up causing grief to all who knew her. The orphaned Indra (Suraiya) is adopted by the wealthy colonial (Sapru) and becomes a companion to his sons Raj (Kapoor) and Kundan (Nasir) but she is hated by Rani, the household’s eldest daughter. Both Raj and Kundan fall in love with Indra, but Rani gets her married to the foreign-returned Ramesh (Suresh) and later causes a rift between the two brothers, resulting in Raj suffering a major accident and indirectly leading to Indira’s death. The film starts with Rani’s own death, after 25 years of isolation. Her character is placed historically between colonial domination (represented by the father) and independent capitalism’s rule with its continuation of traditional patriarchy. She is represented as surrounded by infantile men and logically negative about marriage. Suraiya sang all the nine songs in the film, including the very popular duet Tara ri yara ri (with Mohammed Rafi). There's a mistake in the plot summary as Indra never marries Ramesh. Look for a fifteen year old Shakila in an early film role playing the teenage Rani. After being worked on a lot, the video is okay for most of the film. The same can't be said of the audio. Sometimes it sounds 'hollow' or distorted. This is true during the opening minutes after the credits end and from time to time throughout the film. It doesn't last for too long each time and for those having trouble understanding what is said, you can turn on the subtitles when needed.
