5A Swimming & Diving Winners Jeff Power-Jamail Texas Swim Center-Austin, TX The Vandegrift Lady Vipers set the tone early in the 200 Medley Relay as Senior Madison EYE Bruh-HIM, Senior Sydney Sanders, Sophomore Hannah Palacios and Junior Elizabeth Nelson took home the gold in a time of 1:48:38. The Vipers striking first. The Boys 200 yard medley relay was also a preview of things to come as Kingwood Park rallied past Frisco Wakeland by a half a second to win a time of 1:34:23. The third event was the girls 200 yard freestyle and Prosper's Gabrielle Kopenski set the state record in a time of 1:46:80 eclipsing Allison Arnold's record from Highland Park set in 2009 by almost a full second. The boys 200 yard freestyle was also a state record as Samuel Kline of Frisco Wakeland broke the previous record set by Wakeland teammate Brayden Seal the year before by nearly a full second at 1:38:01. The Girls 200 Individual Medley was won by Prosper's Destiny Nelson in a time of 1:59:97 The Boys 200 IM went to Walter Jones of Bryan High School in a time of 1:49 95 three one hundredths of a second behind the state record set by Michael Miller of Stratford in 2013. The girls 50 yard freestyle also went to a Bryan High School swimmers as Julian Cook won the seventh overall event in a time of 23.50 The Boys 50 yard free was won by Frisco Wakeland's Jacob De-Mer-Cur-EE-Oh in a time of 20.72 just off the record set by Brooks Powell of Kingwood Park in 2012. In the 9th event One Meter Diving Phoebe Lamay of Houston Stratford scored 485.20 points The Boys one meter diving was won by Mathew Phillip of Frisco Liberty at close to 520 points. Event 11 belonged to Dallas Hillcrest swimmer Rebecca Brandt who won the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 56. 13 On the boys side Walter Jones of Bryan surfaced again taking first in the 100 yard fly in a time of 48-54 There is a new girls state record in the 100 yard freestyle as Magnolia's Caitlin Clements edged out district rival Hannah Dooley of Magnolia West in a time of 50-point 39 which broke the previous state record set by Kate Boyer of Highland Park last year. The Boys 14th event went to Owen Upchurch of Boerne Champion 46-0h-8 The girls 500 yard freestyle was another state record for Gabrielle Kopenski of Prosper who finished in a time of 4:42:16. shattering the old state record by Allison Arnold of Highland Park by over four seconds. Samuel Kline of Frisco Wakeland won the boys 500 yard freestyle event in a time of 4:29:11 Now back to the relays where Austin Vandegrift continued their dominance in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:37:18 less than a second ahead of Magnolia West and Magnolia. Junior Jade Federlin, senior Lindsey Thompson, Freshman Kendall Shields and Senior Hannah Brown, won gold in a time of 1:37.18. More on them in a moment. The boys 200 yard freestyle relay went to Houston Stratford in a time of 1:24:70 The girls 100 yard backstroke was won by Destiny Nelson of Prosper breaking a record she set last year by more than a half a second at 54:13. The boys 100 yard backstroke was won by Jacob De-Mer-Cur-EE-Oh in a time of 49.21 The girls 100 yard breaststroke was won by Kylie Powers of Fort Bend Ridge Point. The boys 100 yard breaststroke was won by Brenham's Hudson Smith in a time of 57.19 The Vandegrift girls 400 yard freestyle team made it three relay victories with a time of 3:30:10 followed by Magnolia and Magnolia West respectively. With the Victory Vandegrift clinched the state title.
