Can Wine Cause Allergy Symptoms? | Alvi’s Drift Taste What’s Possible

Indulging in a glass of their favourite tipple is a much-loved pastime for many wine enthusiasts. However, experiencing allergy symptoms after enjoying a delightful glass of red, white, or sparkling wine can be an unpleasant after effect that many wine aficionados have come to know all too well. But did you know that these allergy-like symptoms can have various interesting causes? Contrary to popular belief, sulphur is not the cause of "wine allergies." Sulphur is a mineral, not a protein, and therefore cannot trigger allergies. It can, however, be an irritant (also commonly present in fruit juices and dried fruit products). In wine-growing regions with higher humidity, there is more fungal pressure, leading wine producers to spray their vineyards with antifungal products. These products, when present in wine, can also be irritants – and the cause of allergy-like symptoms. Fortunately, our Alvi's Drift vineyards experience very low rainfall, resulting in less disease pressure and a reduced need for spraying against fungus and pests. What most commonly causes allergy-like symptoms after enjoying wine, is a histamine-based response due to a bacteria that is added to red wine, chardonnay and certain sparkling wines. During the winemaking process, wine producers add a bacteria that converts apple acid into milk acid – a process known as malolactic fermentation. During malolactic fermentation, a compound similar to histamine is released, and this compound often mimics allergic reactions. Symptoms of this allergy-like response in the body may include a stuffy or runny nose, headaches, a tight chest, and skin rashes, to name just a few. At Alvi's Drift, we use specific bacteria that do not trigger allergy-like symptoms in our malolactic fermentation process. This means that you can enjoy our wines without suffering any unpleasant after effects. If you do experience allergy-like symptoms, it is advisable to note which vintages from which wine producers cause this reaction in you. Going forward, be sure to avoid those wines to ensure you do not suffer any unpleasant symptoms after enjoying a glass of your favourite wine. Remember to always consume wine in moderation and stay well-hydrated by also drinking plenty of water. If your body is sufficiently hydrated, you will be able to enjoy your favourite red, white or sparkling wine with minimal, if any adverse after effects.
