Carney pauses campaign again, says Trump's trade war with Canada raises 'stakes'

Liberal leader Mark Carney is pausing his Liberal campaign once again to handle economic pressures brought on by U.S. President Donald Trump and his global tariffs. Though Trump imposed a 90-day pause on nearly all global tariffs Wednesday evening, he confirmed Canada, Mexico and China would not see the same reprieve. “The stakes have never been higher for our economy,” Carney told reporters in Brampton, Ont. “In Canada, there are tariffs that remain in place. And while they have been imposed under different pretenses, they all are unjustified, unwarranted, and misguided,” he added. Carney will meet with the Minister of National Defence and the Committee on Canada-U.S. Relations and National Security on Friday in Ottawa. He says negotiations between Canada and the U.S. will continue after the April 28 federal election. Trump’s decision came after his trade war with China sent the world's stock markets tumbling.
