Former Anambra State governor and presidential hopeful Peter Obi has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the party begins a major membership registration drive in Anambra State. The political event took place in Awka, where Obi registered at Agulu Ward 2 in Anaocha Local Government Area. Also registering with the party were Senator Victor Umeh and former lawmaker Senator Ben Obi, marking a significant development in Nigeria’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections. During the event, Obi strongly criticised parts of the Electoral Act 2026, warning that some provisions could allow political actors to manipulate the next presidential election. He also called on Nigerians to join the ADC in large numbers, saying the 2027 election would be a contest between good leadership and bad governance. Party leaders say the membership drive will distribute 150 membership cards to each of the 326 wards in Anambra State as the first phase of a broader political mobilisation. But the big question remains: Can the ADC become a strong national opposition platform before the 2027 elections?
