He was a Surrealism artist. “I try to apply colors like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music.” - Joan Miro He often used bright colors in his paintings to draw the eyes of viewers. He loved to use red, blue, yellow, green, black and white colors. His father was a watchmaker, and his mother worked as a goldsmith, which means that he was exposed to the arts, and working with various forms of art, from a young age in the home. He never was a good student but his drawing skills were impeccable. Joan Miró started painting when he was fourteen he attended an art school. He then started to develop his own style to draw scenes of trees and landscapes. Joan Miró initially went to business school as well as art school. He began his working career when he was a teenager as a clerk. In 1911, Joan Miró overcame a serious battle with typhoid illness, and at about the same time he abandoned the business world completely to devote his entire life to painting. In 1919 he visited Paris for the first time. There he had the opportunity to see the work being done by the fauvists and dadaist, groups of artists who were experimenting with radical new modes of artistic expression. The Tilled Field (1923-1924) marked the turning point in Joan Miró art toward a personal style. He was known for his use of simple shapes, bright colours, and the symbolic meaning of his artworks. His art is often described as being child-like, dream-like, and playful. He also felt drawn to the Cubist and Surrealist artists who were working in Paris such as Picasso who became his lifelong friend. In 1929 and early 1930s, Joan Miró took an interest in the form of art work, where he worked with many collages. In 1944, he took more of a central focus on doing public works of art. This came in the form of monumental pieces, and public displays, which were specifically created for the enjoyment by the public, and were to be displayed in a number of distinct locations. Joan Miró was incredibly prolific. He produced approximately 2000 paintings, 500 sculptures, 400 ceramics, 5000 drawings, and 1000 lithographs.
