Initially installed in 1989, this Doppelmayr UNI detachable quad has quite the history. When it was first installed in 1989, it was named Glacier Chaser and replaced the Heron double Going to the Sun, it was the first detachable quad in Montana and the longest chairlift in Montana at the time at 7,689ft. In addition to serving mountain biking trails & offering scenic rides, it doubled as a Chondola in the summer, hence the disproportionately long hanger arms. Fast forward to 2007, Glacier Chaser still had plenty of life left in it, but had run summers & winters its whole life, and Whitefish had decided to replace the 1968 Swift Creek Hall double with a detachable to better serve night skiing and provide additional out of base capacity. A bold but smart decision was made to remove Glacier Chaser and use the 18 year old lift to replace Swift Creek, while installing a brand new lift on the base to summit route: The Big Mountain Express. While serving as Swift Creek/Chair 2, this lift has been extremely useful and has just recently started running summers again for mountain biking only. It helps disperse crowds well as BMX/Chair 1 opens at 9:30 while this lift opens at 9:00. It serves a a few night lit runs as well as several nice blues & comes in very handy when BMX/Chair 1 goes down or the upper mountain is too cold to open. It’s a very standard first gen UNI detachable quad, with a tensioned bottom return and a fixed top drive, it uses EJ chairs with elongated hanger arms from its chondola days, the chairs still use the center divider that most ski areas have removed, and DS-104 double position detachable grips, it also retains its 798HP motor from its days as Glacier Chaser and has the classic detachable tone. Overall, it’s a core piece of Whitefish’s lift system, it has recently been announced that this lift will be getting an electrical upgrade this summer so I do not see this going away for a long time.
