Gooneratne argues that these translators lack the cultural and linguistic understanding necessary to accurately translate Asian poetry. Her translations often distort or misrepresent the original works. Therefore, they deprive English-speaking readers of the opportunity to experience the beauty and richness of Asian poetry. This poem also reminds us of the importance of cultural and linguistic understanding in translation. Gooneratne argues that to accurately translate a work of literature, translators must have a deep understanding of the source culture. Without this understanding, translators may produce translations that are inaccurate and misleading. Text of the Poem On an Asian Poet Fallen Among American Translators By Yasmine Gooneratne Oh, Asian poet, fallen among American translators, What has become of your words? Your poems, so carefully crafted, So full of meaning and nuance, Have been twisted and contorted, Made to fit the mold of American culture. Your translators, with their good intentions, Have failed to understand the depths of your poetry. They have replaced your rich imagery, Your complex metaphors, Your subtle symbolism, With bland clichés and obvious meanings. In their hands, your poems have become shadows, Mere imitations of the originals. Your voice has been silenced, Your message lost. Oh, Asian poet, I weep for you. I weep for the loss of your words, For the beauty that has been stolen from the world. But I also rage against the ignorance and arrogance of your translators. How dare they claim to understand your poetry? How dare they presume to translate your words? They have no respect for your culture, No appreciation for your language. They are simply seeking to exploit your poetry for their own gain. But I will not let them win. I will continue to fight for your voice to be heard. I will continue to work to ensure that your poetry is translated accurately and respectfully. Until then, my friend, I will hold your words close to my heart. I will cherish them and protect them, And I will share them with the world, So that your voice may never be silenced.
