Is it possible to lengthen the JK 2.5” LCD Display life from one year to seven years? Only time could tell. I have noticed many JK displays failed around one year. I believe, even with the blackout failure, the on/off switch and the system brain are still functioning. I narrowed the failure modes to three basic areas: backlight power driver, display standby control, and backlight aging. I investigated and used a scope to look for the power driver and found none. The backlight seemed to behave, based on experiment, like a simple proportional voltage to current to intensity control. The display standby is controlled by software and should be quite solid; but it couldn’t be determined without a failed sample. So logically, I started to tackle the backlight aging possibility. It is known that LED lifespan is inversely related to its intensity. The goal is to reduce ~58% of the LED power consumption and to achieve a lifespan of seven years. Fortunately this can be done simply by reducing the input voltage level, without the need of doing PWM control. I just added a 43 ohm1/4W current limiting resistor to the input power wire (the white color one, of the six wires) to drop the voltage down from ~11V to ~9.5V. I also have buck converters on order for future tests. Yet the humble resistor is better than converter for LED thermal runaway.
