The AP news agency reported that clashes between anti-government protesters and police peaked that day, with over one-thousand people injured. The recent protests began with citizens angry about a quota system that reserves 30 percent of public sector jobs for the descendants of those who fought in the Bangladesh Liberation War. University students have been calling the policy discriminatory. “The current situation in Bangladesh and the carnage happened because of the government and its failure. You have done all killings and oppression. Nothing would have happened if you had acted in a just way and met the demand earlier." The government later proposed to reduce the quota to five percent. "Students who are like our children were holding the movement. This movement came to end through the steps of the government and court. Even after (this) if they have anything to say and demand, our Prime Minister has said that her door is open." However, the protests spread across Bangladesh and evolved into demands for the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Local media outlets reported that since last month, more than 300 individuals, including police officers, have died in the violence, with the number expected to rise as more severely injured people succumb to their injuries. They added that at least 70 private and government buildings across Bangladesh were destroyed in the protests.
