Miss. Sharmi Shanmuganathan, Gender Development Officer and Acting Social Safeguarded Officer, Climate Smart Irrigated Agriculture Project, (CSIAP), talks about CSIAP and its current activities on Tamil National Service, Thendral FM and Yaal FM at 7.30am on 16th Nov 2020. The Climate Smart Irrigated Agriculture Project (CSIAP), which is a world bank funded project, has been implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture in eleven districts (Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Puttalam, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Batticaloa, Ampara, Trincomalee, Monaragala and Hambantota) in the dry zone covering six Provincial Councils (North Central, North Western, Northern, Eastern, Uva and Southern). The total cost of the project is US$ 125 million, and it improves the mitigation, adaptation, and productivity of agriculture for more than 470,000 small farmers in six provinces. This six-year-long project will end in December 2025. The objective of this project is to improve the climate resilience of smallholder farming communities and increase the productivity of climate-smart agriculture in selected climatically vulnerable Hot Spot Areas in the selected river basins of Sri Lanka. This objective will be achieved through the improved and modernised management of irrigation water, drought and flood protection systems, increased adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices and technologies, optimised agricultural diversification, enhanced post-crop harvest management practices, and increased linkage and access to better prices and markets.
