PONTASSIEVE | A MUSICAL MAP In the "a musical map" project the NovAntiqua artists make you discover attractive sites in Pontassieve, a small town located in the countryside near Florence. --- JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685-1750) Sarabande, 2nd movement of Suite no.1 in G Major BWV.1007 for Cello arr. for Clarinet solo by Nicolai Pfeffer Nicolai Pfeffer, clarinet Recorded at CASTELLO DEL TREBBIO, Pontassieve --- CASTELLO DEL TREBBIO http://www.castellodeltrebbio.it Castello del Trebbio lies among the green Tuscan hills, in the heart of Chianti Rufina. It is a wine-growing, agricultural company that today is also an agriturismo. The Castle, built before the XII century, is linked to the history of the Pazzi, a rich family of bankers during the Florentine Renaissance who, between the XII and XIV centuries, acquired ownership of all the land surrounding the castle, making it their stronghold. The historical “Pazzi Conspiracy” was hatched in these rooms. In fact, in an attempt to remove the hegemony of the Medici family, the most powerful family in Florence, and with the support of Pope Sisto IV, who was also interested in their fall for economic and political reasons, on April 26th 1478, Giuliano and his brother, Lorenzo de’ Medici, were attacked in Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral during Mass. The former was killed, while Lorenzo the Magnificent, although wounded, managed to save himself by taking refuge in the Sacristy of Masses. The ruinous epilogue of the story consolidated the power of the Medici family and sanctioned the end of the Pazzi’s authority. Today the product chain at Castello del Trebbio is internal to the company, fully respecting nature by using Biointegrale® practices. It is a sustainable project that operates in the agricultural sector using biodynamic techniques, in the energy sector through the use of renewable energy and in the architectural sector with the conservative recovery of buildings. The company’s excellence can be seen in the production of their Chianti Rufina DOCG – the highest expression of the territory – and their Extra Virgin Olive Oil. --- JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH | SUITES FOR CELLO The six Cello Suites, BWV 1007–1012, are some of the most frequently performed and recognizable solo compositions ever written for cello. As usual in a Baroque musical suite, after the prelude which begins each suite, all the other movements are based around baroque dance types; the cello suites are structured in six movements each: prelude, allemande, courante, sarabande, two minuets or two bourrées or two gavottes, and a final gigue. --- NICOLAI PFEFFER https://www.nicolaipfeffer.com Described in the German press as a consummate performer and scholar, Nicolai Pfeffer has been praised in the magazine DER SPIEGEL for his distinctive blend of fluid technique, his colourful, brilliant tone, and unique musical voice. Among the younger generation, Nicolai Pfeffer is already in considerable demand, at home and abroad, as a soloist, chamber musician, and a teacher of students at an advanced level. His new editions of masterworks, based on the detailed examination of the composers’ autographs, early copies and prints, and his original arrangements of virtuoso works for the clarinet, have gained international approval and recognition as a result of having been accepted by one of Germany’s most respected music publishers of urtext editions.
