You mentioned that you have a 2 year old who does't go to bed until really late at night, like around midnight, and you're wondering how to adjust his bedtime. You mentioned that you have other kids, he's just an entirely new beast, you're not sure what to do with him. We have a night owl ourselves and have been dealing with this very issue. With some persistency, consistency, patience, and effort on your part, his bedtime can be changed, but you need to do it slowly. So first of all, pick a bedtime routine that he's going to react well to. Maybe, if you've been using electronic devices up to this point, that's the problem. TVs, iPads, all those kinds of things - they've actually been proven to contribute to insomnia in children. So pick a routine that doesn't involve those kinds of things, and start it around 11:30 pm, and hopefully he'll be going to sleep around 11:45 pm. Call that his new bedtime for a week. After he's gotten that down, then move it back another 15 minutes, so you're starting the routine around 11:15 pm, and he's going to bed at 11:30 pm, and so on. Move it back gradually 15 minutes at a time, and if you do this, he won't notice it, but it will make a big difference in the end. Continue to do this until you're getting him to bed at the time you would like to see him to go to bed. Also think about naps, because sometimes that can contribute to the problem. For example, if he's taking an early evening nap, then that might be the reason why he's not tired until midnight. So try adjusting his nap time and see if that makes a difference, if you think it's contributing to the problem. If you feel like these interventions aren't helping, and he's having a hard time initiating sleep and staying asleep, talk with your pediatrician, and they can give you more advice based on their knowledge of the situation. Good luck with it, and if you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at / intermountainmoms , and recommend us to your friends and family too.
