Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Island is India’s main missile testing site. It is a small island located in the Bay of Bengal, just off the coast of Odisha. The island was earlier called Wheeler Island but was renamed in honor of former President and missile scientist A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. It is managed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and forms part of the country’s Integrated Test Range. The island is about two kilometers long and is connected to the mainland only by sea transport. Equipment and missile parts are carried to the island by ships, and there is also a helipad for quick access. The site has launch pads, assembly buildings, control centers, tracking and radar stations, and living facilities for scientists and staff who work there during missile trials. Most of India’s important missile programs have been tested from this island. The Agni and Prithvi series, the Akash air defense system, the BrahMos cruise missile, and even anti-satellite systems have all been launched from here. In recent years, new systems like the Pralay missile and hypersonic technologies have also been trialed successfully at this site. The location of the island also means that testing must be done with care to protect the environment. It lies close to areas where olive ridley sea turtles nest, so restrictions are placed during the breeding season to avoid disturbing wildlife. Despite these challenges, the island continues to be a vital part of India’s defense research, helping the country strengthen and advance its missile capabilities.
