While Bach never actually used this clever signature, musicians devised the B A C H score in the 19th century and sketched it out in Bach's hand. In German musical notation, B♭, A, C, B♮ are written as B A C H, cleverly spelling out the composer's name. By using a treble clef, tenor clef, alto clef, and another treble clef, this beautiful cross drawing spells out the word with a single note intersecting the four staves. If read clockwise, starting from the left treble clef, the notes in German musical nomenclature would read: B (b flat), A (the tenor clef indicates that the fourth line from bottom to top is a C, making the third line a natural A), C (the alto clef works similarly but indicates the third line is a C) and H (b natural). Which evidently writes BACH.
