The art of nature. ‘After Nature’, a collaborative exhibition from CLOSE and Proposition, in Bethnal Green is curated by Ben Tufnell. Exhibiting 15 multidisciplinary artists, ‘After Nature II’ which started in Somerset, explores ways of making art “after” nature, in imitation of natural forms and systems. A focus of the show is re-imagining future pathways through which humanity can reinstate a more equitable relationship to the natural world. CLOSE is a slow-gallery that sits in a Somerset Nature Reserve founded by Freeny Yianni. Proposition, Bethnal Green, is a gallery and project space embedded in the fabric of London’s fast-paced east end. Transposed into this new context, we are invited to reimagine urban ecologies and reflect on nature’s sustained presence in spaces that have been moulded entirely to human design. Here, Onya McCausland walks us through her richly-textured paintings made with ochre pigment from mining waste. Simon Hitchens presents his stark, durational drawings and sculpture, tracing the outlines of the shadows cast by a rock throughout the day. Nissa Nishikawa walks us through her ceramics fired with organic materials sourced from the landscape around CLOSE’s Somerset home On view until 14 February 2026.
