Things are going to get crazier over the next six months. We have no idea where we’re headed with sports in general. In the sports world, organisers are going to try to make things happen. They’re going to try to get out on the field and, most likely, a lot of sports are going to start playing with no fans in attendance. What does that mean? We’ll start with the NHL. There’s no home advantage, ice is ice and they know how to play. They are all going to be in the same city, there’s nobody cheering, there’s nobody affecting the officials calls. My feeling is, with no crowd support, games will be a little bit tighter and will give the underdogs a much better chance to win. The bigger the favorite is, the more chance they are going to win because there will be no crowd support helping the underdog get back into a game, but I expect to see underdogs do well. I hate to lay those type of prices, but in games that are going to be competitive I’d look to bet the underdog because they will bark, and they will win. The time off is another factor. When the NHL and NBA start back up, this isn’t 2019/20, this is 2020, it’s really a new season. Even though it’s the playoffs, players that were rookies at the start of the 2019/20 season are no longer rookies. They have had their experience as a first year guy, they’re stepping in and are ready to go. Players who were brand new on a team now have the continuity and are used to playing with their teammates. They know the offence, the defence, they know everyone’s movement on the team. New coaches have gotten their style in too. That may take a little bit longer, but that team is going to be far better and will start showing improvement after a game or two. Moving onto college football and that’s going to be very tough with no fans. It’s a game where home field could be worth five, six, even seven points in some cases but there’s now no home advantage. Louisiana travels to Florida and play the Gators. I’m not giving any home advantage because I just don’t see it being a factor. How fired up will Florida get with no crowd and the intimidation factor gone for opponents? I expect to see some major upsets in college sports. NFL is going to be the same way. In the NFL, players aren’t intimidated by fans anyway, but those crowds do get a call or two to go the way of their team. They also create so much noise that the quarterback can’t communicate properly with the wide receivers and his offensive players and that can hurt their play. I think there will be more points scored in NFL games and more points scored in college football games because the communication for the offense will be far better with no crowds. You’ll see less false starts for the offense because they won’t be putting themselves in 2nd and 15 or 1st and 15. They’ll always have the advantage that they’ll be really leaning forward and moving downhill, with the defence playing uphill. We’ll see, things could change and when they do, I’ll make sure I’m here for you. I’ll get you the information you need to get a winning ticket in your pocket. Stay tuned at Don Best Sports."
