From Ethiopia to Harvard: an inspirational life story of our alumnus Workneh

Our alumnus Workneh grew up in a small village called Matala in Southern Ethiopia. His childhood was challenging, he spent most of his time in forests, keeping cattle, collecting firewood. Workneh studied in a local school and also worked as a shoeshine boy in order to buy kerosene that he used at night to study. At the age of 16 Workneh applied for a scholarship and was selected for his talent and persistence, passion for learning and unfailing empathy. He joined UWC Dilijan with a scholarship from a private donor. The education at UWC Dilijan transformed Workneh’s life. “I can feel a really huge change in me. This has been a great place where I could actually find myself. I became able to get all the ingredients which can motivate and influence in education. I am going to contribute to my country and to the globe as a whole”, says Workneh. Workneh graduated from UWCD in 2018 and was admitted to Harvard College.
