Have you ever heard of the song Sweet Home Alabama made by Lynard Skynard? Well... this house is where it all originated. During today's exploration, I'm taking you inside the Abandoned Sweet Home Alabama. It's a Queen Anne and Neoclassical-styled home built for Henry W Sweet in 1906. This home is over a century old and was featured in the 2017 Hollywood movie Truth or Dare. The movie is about "Eight college friends that head to a 'Haunted Rental' for Halloween. But when they replay the game that made the house infamous, they awaken an evil spirit intent on stealing their souls." The movie features many actors, but one actor that stood out is Heather Langenkamp, who also played the role of Nancy in the Freddy Kruger Nightmare on Elm Street movie. The story of this house is intertwined with the life of Henry W Sweet, Bessemer, Alabama's first Undertaker and furniture dealer. Designed by architect William E. Benns to Henry's specifications, this three-story, 5,000 sqft mansion was a testament to his success. It boasted a double entry facade, an octagonal turret, and stately columns, making it one of the most impressive homes in the town. Built at a cost of only $10,000, it was later recognized as a historic landmark in 2006 by the Alabama Historical Association. Henry and his wife's legacy extended beyond this grand house. They had a son, also named Henry Sweet, who became a Jefferson County Commissioner and played a pivotal role in bringing the University of Alabama Medical Center to Birmingham. This house, therefore, not only stands as a testament to their wealth and status but also to their contributions to the community.
