SPOOKHILL, SOMERSET WEST, SOUTH AFRICA - One Of The Most Beautiful Roads in South Africa To Xplore

Join me on this scenic drive on one of the most beautiful little roads in Somerset West, Cape Town, South Africa. This road is almost as illusive as it's name, not many locals know of it and some has never seen it. The annual 15 km Spook hill running race, is rated as one of the most challenging races - I've done this race a couple times and can attest to that! Spook Hill on Paarl valley Road in Somerset West (in front of Straightway Head Country House) has long boasted the creepy tales of cars left without breaks going 'uphill', leading to the myth that the hill is haunted or even a gravity hill which makes everything topsy-turvy. The myth has reportedly been debunked, and the hill is an optical illusion where what appears uphill is in fact downhill. The illusion is created by the trees on the road being slightly skew, and a gradient change midway 'down' the hill. Spook Hill has generated many a discussion as to whether this apparent phenomenon is an optical illusion, is due to magnetism, or is one of the world’s great unsolved mysteries. Some argue that it just ‘appears’ as if the hill is going upwards but in fact it is going downwards. The best is to try it out for yourself. Drive to the start point, best viewed in front of the Spanish Farm Estate board, put your car in neutral, let down the handbrake, and experience what happens next! Spooky indeed... even more spooky when facing north. The road ahead will appear downhill, but in neutral you will start reversing back uphill! Warning!
