The creation of LA Harbor was tumultuous at best. First contemplated in 1850, it took until 1913 for construction to begin. Along the way the controversy over its fate played into numerous defining issues of the times, from the Civil War to class conflict and imperialism. James Tejani (my former MA thesis advisor) wrote a book exploring that narrative, which has won the Bancroft Prize - the most prestigious award in the history profession.
