The Whirlpool Galaxy (Messier 51) is a Galaxy in the constellation Canes Venatici. It is about 31 Million lightyears from earth. This Galaxy was first discovered on October 13, 1773, by Charles Messier. The whirlpool and its companion galaxy - M51a (NGC 5194) and M51b (NGC 5195) - are an interacting grand-design spiral galaxy.
