Streptococcus bacteria have caused uncountable deaths from infection throughout history, and in 1935, humanity finally got a tool to fight them. Starting in 1932, Bayer and IG Farben started testing compounds for antibacterial properties. This culminated with Prontosil (sulfanilamide) in 1935, one of the first effective antibacterial drugs.
