This video begins with me playing a few Half life 2 beta maps. While playing some of the maps I had the idea that Valve really found no reason to repurpose or utilize previous map geometry they abandoned. My idea is that textures and layout couldv've be reconfigured for any instance of story created. My one example would be air exchange couldve been quickly retextured and reworked to be utilized in a future chapter within the episodes when valve was still working on them but instead they tried to keep making new maps from scratch. This eventually led them to getting burned out and opting out on episode 3. Then also destroying every 3rd party studios half life 2 expansion including Arkane Studios Half life Opposing Force 2 Ravenholm. It is honestly baffling to see how much content and decent geometry/lighting schemes there are in the beta that never got repurposed. I know from experience that working on a map that is already somewhat built is way easier than making fresh new maps. In the case of someone arguing that beta maps arent compatible with modern source I can say Beta maps can be decompiled with tools like BSPSrc and even run on the newest source versions of half life 2 when recompiled. I am a huge Valve fan but I was a little mad when I figured out that Valves burn out caused us to lose more half life content that was very close to being finished.
