Day 68 of The Long Ride to Byzantium SİLİVRİ ➡️ İSTANBUL (70 km) So, the final day was here. And damn — it was wild. I started from Emre’s place after two chill nights by the Marmara coast, ready for the last push toward Byzantium. I knew the highway would be intense… but nothing could’ve prepared me for this. The closer I got to Istanbul, the more the chaos exploded — fifteen million people condensed into one roaring organism. Cars everywhere, horns blaring, trucks swerving, pure madness. I was right in the middle of it all — a tiny speck on two wheels, dodging, pushing, surviving. At times, I was terrified. But also completely alive. The craziest 5,700 km ride of my life — into Europe’s largest city. From the distance, I saw it: the skyline rising over the hills, the sea shimmering, the mosques and minarets lit in the night. I rode along beaches packed with people and even stopped for one last swim — a quiet moment inbetween the chaos. By the time I reached the old city, night had fallen. I passed the ancient walls, and finally stood before Hagia Sophia — the end of this chapter of Pedal or Perish. Byzantium. The dream made real. I knew this moment would come, but it didn’t feel like a climax — more like a pause. I’ve seen too much for one “highlight.” The castles of Poland, the mountains of Romania, the friendly smiles of the Serbs, the melancholy of Hungary, the madness of Bulgaria, and the soul of Turkey — every single day was a highlight. This journey doesn’t end here. It just shifts. I’ll keep pedaling — maybe south into Anatolia, maybe east toward the Silk Road. Still deciding. Thanks for following The Long Ride to Byzantium.
