On 27th July 1986 the Gorkha National Liberation Front supremo Subash Ghising had declared to burn the Indo-Nepal treaty of 1950. Thousands of people were gathered to be a part of a historic moment. Today all the survivors and the Martyr’s family tell that they encountered a rampant shooting of bullets where unofficially more than 1200 people were killed. At a juncture where the political parties are divided into factions of Gurung, Thapa, and Ghising-a resident of Joremaney, Sindebong, Daljit Diyali, recalls the incident that occurred at Kalimpong Main Road. Diyali, was 22 years old when he decided to join his mother and sister for the mass procession on 27th July 1986. Diyali said that the police had warned not to move forward while the gathering reached Dambar Chowk- the heart of the town. 'The police told us about the imposition of 144 CrPC and also that they have a firing order, in no time, we heard the sound of bullets. There was a girl of 14 years, her face was shot, I didn't know what to do, I was there alert, and my eyes were in search of my mother and sister. I was somehow pushed towards Bagdhara, and I survived' Diyali said, adding that by the time he realized that he was alive, his mother was shot dead. Another, Punia Rai from Pedong still longs for compensation for her father’s sacrifice. Her father, Bhagat Ram Rai, was killed in April 1986. Punia was 6 years old. ‘I don’t remember much, but all I can say is that the void can never be fulfilled. I don’t see justice, for, despite his death and despite so many other deaths- we have received nothing other than remembrance on this day... a greater land or Gorkhaland is the only place of justice for us’ said Rai as she attended an event of Shahid Diwas in Shahid Park on Tuesday. All the 123 different families present at Shahid Park Topkhana, on Tuesday, remember the day of what the political analysts call-the most brutal (Gorkhaland) Agitation. Chayasi ko Andolan (agitation of 1986) in Nepali vernacular is enough for the senior citizens to put in the picture of a long story short. Meanwhile, Suman Gazmer, an art teacher who lives in 10th Mile, later said that his mother, Anita Gazmer, was killed randomly while she was by the window, brushing her hair. She was 32 years when she was killed. ‘It was 16th January 1987, I was 9 years old. She was by the window of our house. The bullet hit her heart and lungs. We didn’t know what was happening. All we saw was blood around- seeing the situation; my grandfather got a massive heart attack and died. It was a story of two deaths in our house’ said Gazmer. These families have not received much from any political parties. They are still waiting for compensation that could help them financially or at least get a government job for a regular monthly income. However, the Morcha factions of Bimal, Anit, and other political parties like GNLF, observed Shahid Diwas and felicitated the family of the martyrs at Shahid Park, Kalimpong on Tuesday. (Shahid Park was constructed in the memory of 1,200 martyrs who were killed in a CRPF firing during the Gorkhaland agitation of 1986 led by the GNLF supremo, Subash Ghising... Each year 27th July is commemorated as Martyrs Day. The park was constructed after the formation of the erstwhile Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council.)
