In my pastoral Journey, I have been asked several times, the question of “Who is the Holy Spirit?” the simple answer is that the Holy Spirit is not merely another power, but a Person, as part of Triune God—active and relational. Scripture reveals the Holy Spirit as the teacher, guide, and source of truth: “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things” Jesus says. From the very beginning, the Spirit has been at work, hovering over creation (Genesis 1:2), and continues to shape the Church by distributing gifts “for the common good” (1 Corinthians 1:27). This is the most important of all, the Holy Spirit reveals God’s heart and draws believers into deeper communion with Him. Then the question becomes, “Why the Holy Spirit?” because there is a deep desire that arises from the deep human longing for God’s nearness and guidance. The Holy Spirit is given because we cannot live the Christian life by our own strength. In moments of weakness, confusion, or fear, the Spirit empowers, comforts, and teaches us how to live as children of God. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit not as an abstract force, but as God’s abiding presence within us. “Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God” (Romans 8:14). The fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—are signs of God’s active work within us (Galatians 5:22-23). In pastoral life, this reminds us that growth in faith is not forced but formed through surrender to the Spirit’s gentle leading.
