In this video, Vanessa Cool explains her PhD thesis ‘Load-carrying vibro-acoustic sandwich panels: a meta-structure approach’. This dissertation investigates sandwich meta-structures, a fusion of sandwich panels and metamaterials. Through a comprehensive computational framework, their analysis, design and experimental validation is investigated showing their potential as solutions which are lightweight, stiff and achieve superior acoustic performance. This PhD was supervised by prof. Wim Desmet, prof. Elke Deckers and prof. Frank Naets within the LMSD research group at KU Leuven, Belgium. A research stay was performed during the PhD with prof. Ole Sigmund and prof. Niels Aage within the TopOpt research group at the Technical University of Denmark on vibro-acoustic topology optimization.
