Various shots inside parliament - lawmakers arguing In Georgia on Tuesday protests intensified against President Eduard Shevardnadze. 600 protestors gathered at the square outside Georgia's parliament that has been the focal point for anti-Shevardnadze rallies for a week. Critics accuse President Eduard Shevardnadze, a reformist Soviet foreign minister under Mikhail Gorbachev, of failing to stem corruption or improve the country's economic situation. Shevardnadze has insisted he would not step down, dissolve parliament or disperse the demonstrators, saying the crisis should be solved through democratic means. Meanwhile, Georgia's parliament failed to elect a new speaker in a key session. After choosing a new speaker, lawmakers were to debate Shevardnadze's proposal to create the post of prime minister, which would likely diminish the parliament speaker's role. But lawmakers could not decide between the two proposed candidates, Nino Burdzhanadze, a woman who enjoys support from opposition parties, and Bazha Lordkipanidze, a former Cabinet minister and ambassador to Russia who is supported by the president. Parliament agreed after an all-day debate to postpone the vote until Friday. But former Soviet republic's political crisis showed no sign of subsiding. Shevardnadze fired the government last week in response to a failed security raid on Georgia's leading independent television station, sparking tensions that threaten the hard-won stability of this nation on Russia's volatile southern border.
