Directed by academy award nominated director Judith Montell, the film chronicles the life of celebrated Detroiter Saul Wellman who risked his life for his beliefs and eventually became an internationally honored thinker, activist, writer and mentor. Labor organizer in the 1930s, Wellman fought in the Spanish Civil War and then became a paratrooper in World War II. Wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, after the war he led the Communist Party's organizing efforts in the Detroit auto industry. During the Red Scare Wellman became acting chair of the Michigan party, and with the rest of the leadership was arrested, put on trial, and convicted under the Smith Act. Although Wellman was sent to jail during the trial, the verdict was finally set aside in 1957 by the Supreme Court. Wellman left the party that year and became a printer, remaining a union and political activist. During the 1960s and after, he became a well-known as a mentor to many young activists, and received local, national and international awards. He died in 2003 at age 90. This film is a unique collaboration between Montell, Detroit Public Television, and WSU Professor Ronald Aronson; and was supported by Wayne State University, Michigan Humanities Council, Detroit Public Benefit Corporation and hundreds of individual contributors.
