Sunil pulled no punches when asked about contingency plans if General Electric (GE) fails to deliver the F404-IN20 engines on schedule for the Tejas Mk1A program. His answer was straightforward and sobering: there simply isn't one-and for good reason. "The engine is decided first, then the aircraft is designed around it," Sunil explained. "Changing the engine would mean the aircraft becomes a brand-new design. It's not something you can do overnight or even in a short timeframe." That reality leaves HAL with little room to maneuver.
