The Pennikurvers - s/t 7" (1995)

The Pennikurvers were a band from El Monte, California, forming in late 1994, and disbanding sometime in 1996. It consisted of: Bobby Adams (guitar, vocals), Dave Seward Lewis (bass), Emily Dalton (guitar, vocals) and Suzie Savoie (drums). They played around a dozen shows in the wider LA area, and in total recorded 4 songs (Heliotrope is the fourth one, not included here). In 2025, Numero picked them up and rereleased their material on Dying To Tell. Their only release, this 7", was recorded April-May, and released on Dieselhead Records. The songs are quite beautiful, and for sure are the peak of late 90s emo. They have such a different sound compared to any other band I heard! Personal favourite is Halo, but Daredevil is also excellent. Fun fact, the band's name is actually just "Pennikurvers" while the 7" is "The Pennikurvers", as said by the guitarist of the band (presumably Bobby) in a Discogs edit of the 7". I discovered this band by reading Desperate and Lonely's article on Flex Lavender (https://discohijack.blogspot.com/2011...) - he said on the blog that those who like that band might like this one, so I tried it - and man, is it good. Note 1: on my channel, I reuploaded this EP as the sound was bad (exported it at 192 kb/s). Should be good now, sucks to throw away 300 views, but at least I spotted it now. Note 2: You'll notice that this upload seems sped up in comparison to others - I would say this is the more natural version, which ‪@jacobwhite5523‬ uploaded. I have no idea why his is the only one that's sped up this way, but I like it. It's not a big enough change so that perhaps the record was played at the wrong speed. Instead, it seems to just be that either his record player was sped up like that (situation similiar to ‪@SimonB.‬ ) or that everyone else's speed was wrong. Note 2.5: The vocalist, Emily, confirmed on Instagram that Numero's speed is correct. Still, I don't care! It sounds WAY BETTER like this.
