Baylor Opera Theatre presents Jacques Offenbach’s Le mariage aux lanternes Guillot: Kyle Felkins Fanchette: Hannah Hyden Catherine: Amy Pressman Country Guard: Valarie Miles Denise: Jen Stephenson Pianist: Mario Barbosa Director and Producer: Dr. Jen Stephenson Musical Preparation and Conductor: Dr. Jeffrey Peterson Premiered in 1857, Le marriage aux lanternes is one of the ninety-eight operettas written by Offenbach in his long and prolific career. Unlike many of his more farcical comedies, this short work has a much more sentimental and pastoral feeling. Synopsis: The young Denise has been sent by her uncle, Mathurin, to live with his Godson, Guillot, on Guillot’s farm in the country. Guillot, tongue-tied and flustered by his deep love of Denise, feels unable to admit his true feelings to her because, as a poor peasant, he would cannot provide her with the life he feels she deserves. His feelings of inferiority are compounded by the apparent interst in Denise by Grevin, the town playboy. Denise mistakes Guillot’s longing and awkwardness for irritation with her, which saddens her greatly, as she is secretly in love with Guillot. Unbeknownst to each other, both Denise and Guillot write to their uncle Mathurin for advice – Denise, because she is lonely, and Guillot because he is poor. Mathurin returns each of their letters in kind, telling each that they will find what they seek under the largest tree near the farm. Overhearing Guillot read his uncle’s letter describing a great treasure, two village women, Catherine and Fanchette, decide to marry Guillot for themselves – or at least, to find and keep the treasure. At dusk while the local church’s Angelus bells sound, Denise wanders to the large tree, frustrated that her uncle has apparently played a joke on her by telling her that she will meet her future husband under the tree. Still curious to see if her husband might appear, she waits until past sunset, but then becomes disoriented in the dark. Without being able to find her way home, she falls asleep under the tree. Meanwhile, Guillot has arrived at the tree to dig up the treasure that his uncle’s letter promised him. Upon seeing the sleeping Denise, Guillot realizes that she is his treasure, and he confesses his love and asks her to marry him, much to the chagrin of the village women who have also been looking for the treasure in the dark. In the final scene, an apparent appeal from the librettist, the actors drop their characters and speak directly to the audience, saying that the piece was intended as a light-hearted and fun work not to be taken seriously, and because of this, the audience should clap loudly and forgive the actors for the non-serious nature of the work.
