President Ronald Reagan cited American students under martial law, Soviet-sponsored militarization and the construction of a 10,000 foot runway as the justifications for the invasion. It was one of the few times in recent history that U.S. troops were sent on a combat mission in their own hemisphere. But not everything went according to plan.
