Sleep, Stages of sleep & Neuroscience 🔔 Subscribe now with all notifications on for more content about Neuroscience Welcome back to our channel, where we will break down #neuroscience into simpler terms for you! Many people often carry misconceptions about the stages of #sleep. So, in today’s video, we will explore the #stagesofsleep and clear any misconceptions and doubts once and for all! A lot of things happen in your body when you enter into your sleep mode. Therefore, we use an electroencephalogram (EEG) for measuring your brain’s electrical activity and determining the different stages of sleep. This device generates waves without varying frequency and amplitude with time. The research found out that you keep switching between the REM and non-REM stages of sleep. REM or rapid eye movement is the period when you enter into the world of dreams. When you start falling asleep, you usually start with the Non-REM stages, which can be subdivided into three stages. The first stage is characterized by low amplitude and high-frequency EEG graphs, lasting for about five to ten minutes. During this period, it is pretty easy for you to wake up. This is followed by the appearance of sleep spindles and K complexes on EEG, which are high-frequency waves and biphasic waves, respectively. This is when your heart rate becomes slower, and your body temperature cools down. This second stage is your light sleep period, followed by the third phase in the non-REM stage. In this stage, the EEG graph comprises at least 20% delta waves with high amplitude and low frequency, and this stage can also be referred to as the deep sleep period. This is when your body mends any damaged tissues and regrows them. In addition, your immune system gets strengthened during this period, and if you wake up in this stage, you will naturally feel disoriented. Next, you are back to stages two and one before entering the REM state. You normally enter the REM state about 90 minutes post falling asleep. You would find that your eyes are moving rapidly, but your muscles are completely relaxed during this stage. Your brain becomes active, and you start having vivid and intense dreams! This stage is crucial because it stimulates the parts of your brain responsible for learning new things and is often associated with the production of proteins. Usually, the first REM stage lasts for about 10 minutes, after which you wake up for a brief amount of time and restart the cycle. An average person would undergo this cycle about 4 to 5 times. With the dawn of each cycle, the REM stage duration increases. This can go for as long as an hour. Overall, one cycle lasts between 90 to 110 minutes, and it highly varies with age. For example, babies spend about 50% of their time in the REM stages, while adults spend about 20%. Finally, we will end this video with the fact that your brain sends chemicals to paralyze your muscles to stop them from enacting your dreams!
