HYPHENS | English Lesson

HYPHENS In today's lesson, Kevin teaches you how to use hyphens. NOTE: There are a few minor hyphen rules that were left out of the video: RULE #1. We usually don't use hyphens AFTER the subject being described: "He was a well-known author." vs. "His works were well known." The words "well-known" are hyphenated when they come BEFORE the subject they describe but are typically not hyphenated when they come after it. But, again, this isn't always the case; just remember that, above all, hyphens are about clarity. RULE #2. We usually don't use hyphens with "-ly" words because ambiguity is virtually impossible. For example, you would not need a hyphen in the sentence "He was a impressively dressed man." Likewise, you would not need a hyphen in the sentence "They spoke a largely incoherent language.") -- FREE PRACTICE BELOW -- DIRECTIONS: Place hyphens where they belong in each sentence below. Some sentences may not require hyphens at all. 1. She is my sister in law. 2. He took over in the mid 1990s. 3. My mom is forty two years old. 4. My three year old cousin threw a tantrum. 5. Three fourths of our class missed the game. 6. She works in a nine story building. 7. Let’s take a ten minute break. 8. Yeah, he’s pretty self absorbed. 9. Her ex boyfriend moved to Canada. 10. She lived during the fourth century. ANSWERS: 1. She is my sister-in-law. 2. He took over in the mid-1990s. 3. My mom is forty-two years old. 4. My three-year-old cousin threw a tantrum. 5.
