Year one you get the cane to the upper wire. Year two you cut off the dominate bud at the top near the wire and buds below the top branch out and you direct each one down the upper wire. Year two the cane up to the wire is now called the trunk. The two canes on the wire grow to the desired length and you cut off the ends. They are now called cordons. The buds on the cordon open and become shoots that will produce grapes later. Year three you cut the shoots grow from the cordon back to 2 to 3 buds. The buds then grow fruit producing shoots. When shoots change color from green to brown they are called canes.
