CRACO, THE GHOST TOWN OF BASILICATE , ITALIA I 4K DRONE AERIAL VIEWS WITH SUBTITLES I FUN FACTS Nestled in the valleys of Basilicata, Craco stands abandoned amid the striking badlands known from Carlo Levi’s Christ Stopped at Eboli. Located about 50 km from Matera and 40 km from the Gulf of Taranto, Craco sits on a cliff overlooking the Cavone River valley. Human presence in the area dates back to the 8th century, with the town offering refuge to Greeks fleeing malaria. Initially called Montedoro, it later became Graculum, meaning "little plowed field." Craco grew into a military hub under Frederick II, and during the Middle Ages, it expanded with the addition of a university and grand palaces. Craco’s decline began in the late 19th century with emigration to the U.S. and worsened with landslides, floods, and an earthquake in 1980 that led to its complete abandonment. Today, Craco’s haunting landscape has attracted filmmakers, with its most notable appearance in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ and many more.
