Two Dassault Rafales are on initial and there has recently been a warning flare fired to inform the pilots of a birdstrike hazard. The two Rafale pilots break into downwind but you will also notice flocks of birds outside the station. At first I thought it was a wing wave (it could have been to acknowledge the flare) but slowing things down and reviewing the footage indicates the skill from both pilots avoiding numerous birds. When the pilots safely landed, I noticed the "ROVER" vehicle (Yellow trackman style vehicle) present. A bird strike by definition, a collision between a bird and an aircraft which is in flight, during takeoff or landing. The term birdstrike is a universal term to cover all collisions of birds and bats included. Bird Strikes are common but we need to highlight one word, SAFETY! Bird strikes are potentially a threat to life and are not subject to just military aircraft but civilian aircraft too. Aircraft safety is key and it is not just for the pilots, crew and passengers, but in the event of a severe worse case scenario, for anyone on the ground too. Birdstrikes can cause significant damage and the risk of canopies being smashes, structural damage and loss of thrust or engines with the ingestion of birds in either the intakes or engines. The damage to propeller engines can also cause significant damage to potentially damage the engine. Birds being ingested into intakes and engines has resulted in a number of fatal accidents. Bird strikes can happen during any phase of a flight but most frequent occurrences are on take off, on a climb, on the approach and landing phases. Most bird strikes happen during the day due to the birds flying behaviour. A pilot has to be vigilant at all times and as you can see from the video (if this was a birdstrike) then the pilot did exceptionally well. We cannot be 100% but what we do know is that there was 1 or 2 birds in sight, 1 clearly flew across the runway during the takeoff roll.
