The last date Aussies can lodge their tax return themselves and avoid incurring a $313 late fine is October 31. If you’re worried about meeting the deadline, you may be able to get an extension by lodging through a tax agent. Tax Invest Accounting director and registered tax agent Belinda Raso told Yahoo Finance that Aussies who do this could be eligible for an “automatic extension” to May 15, 2025. Raso said, “You’ll need to contact them and get on their books by the 31st of October. That’s just simply a phone call letting them know your details…” However, not everyone will be eligible for the extension, and you’ll need to have lodged your tax return on time last year. Raso also recommends people “double-check” with their tax agent that the extension still applies to them. You can face a $313 fine if you fail to lodge your tax return by the due date, and that fine increases every 28 days your tax return is overdue. The fine can go up a maximum of five times to $1,565.
