#tassatuesday In the #tassadrumming world there are hands or rhythmic patterns called "fine hands" or classical hands. Fine, meaning intricate (as opposed to coarse). This hand is called Thumri.. a subgenre of Trinidadian Classical music. The word Thumri is derived from the Hindi word thumakna ठुमकना which means "to walk with dancing steps so as to make the ankle bells tinkle" [Wikipedia]. Thumri, like many fine hands, was derived from the Trinidadian classical rhythmic pattern played on the dholak (an accompanying dual headed barrel-shaped drum). Though different, a major parallel is the use of a "barti" section in both the dholak and Tassa. A barti is simply a climactic change in rhythmic pattern.. 'breaking' the original rhythm pattern or "breaking of the taal" [a common phrase used by Tassa drummers and Trinidadian classical musicians].. followed by the return to original root rhythmic pattern. Another similarity is the "swing" feel of both the Tassa and dholak rhythms. [See examples at the end.] In this hand, I kept thumakna in mind and tried to add little decorations towards the end of the hand. Hope you enjoy your leisurely stroll in the meadow with your ankle-bells jingling! Thanks for watching! [And please forgive my mistakes.. older drummers may frown upon any decorating of fine hands.🙅🏽♂️] About the drum: Goat skin, heat tuned Tassa. This drum is not "sewn" like a traditional Tassa; rather it was re-headed African Djembe style. About the hand: This is Central and North Trinidad styled Thumri. I have heard variations of the beat patterns from South Trinidadian drummers. [Either way.. there is no right or wrong.. just the drummer's interpretation and the lovely listener's perception.] This is a simple structure of the hand. Again, the performer may include more than one barti, go from barti to another barti and so forth. For further reading: Thumri is originally a vocal genre of East Indian music with minimal similarities to the Trinidadian subgenre - as far as rhythmic patterns are concerned. The Trinidadian lyrics however are strikingly similar to Bhojpuri speaking regions in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in India (Manuel, Peter - "Tales, Tunes, and Tassa Drums" 2015). Examples of Trinidad styled Thumri: 1. Wonderful singing by Devashish Ramdath accompanied with excellent drumming by Akash Daniel • Devashish Ramdath-Hari Kaa Bhajan (Thumri) 2. Raw and unparalleled drumming played by dholak master Aaron Jewan Singh, who is also a skilled vocalist • Aaron jewan singh playing a tumree in Trin... 3. Singer: Robby Dalip accompanied by Akash Dalip on dholak. [I personally enjoyed this version of the song Nanda Baba. I haven't heard it done in Thumri.. only Chutney. Performed terrifically!] • Robby Dalip performs Nanda Baba at tribute... ***HOMEWORK: Can you identify the barti section in these videos? ✅
