Dr. Sarvam TerKonda, a Mayo Clinic plastic surgeon, discusses reconstruction surgery after breast cancer treatment. This interview originally aired Oct. 19, 2019. Around 250,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Even as cancer treatments have become increasingly targeted and refined, many women choose to have a mastectomy versus lumpectomy and radiation. And close to half of women who undergo mastectomy have reconstruction using one of two options: reconstruction with implant surgery or reconstruction with flap surgery.
