The word Hangxiety is a hybrid of hangover and anxiety and is the lingering unease that often accompanies the morning after the night before. It accompanies the physical symptoms of over-indulging, such as headache, nausea and fatigue. When we feel anxious, especially if we have social anxiety, we may be more likely to turn to alcohol as a coping strategy to get through a night out, or to numb how we are feeling if we have general anxiety. Hangxiety is the unsettling psychological feeling of dread and nervousness that one feels after a heavy night of drinking, often overshadowing any fun memories. Hangxiety sums up the experience of waking up with emotional turmoil and physical discomfort after indulging in alcohol. Maybe you have memory gaps from the night before and you feel anxious or nervous about what happened? This could lead you to feeling on edge or irritable the following day. Hangxiety is a combination of neurochemical fluctuations in our body as well as psychological influences. When we generally struggle with anxiety, we may feel that a drink (or five!) helps us to relax and acts as a social lubricant, but as the alcohol wears off, the anxiety returns with a vengeance.
