Directed by Nick Fenton, this performance is a fierce work of worldbuilding, featuring striking graphics projected on screen and enhanced in post-production to reflect the childlike wonder of the natural sciences that inspired Biophilia. Following the Icelandic financial crisis from 2008-2011, Biophilia was created in response to the times, investigating the intersection of music, technology, and politics. Dressing as a persona replicating the cover art, Björk sports a colossal orange wig and an artfully painted face. She is accompanied onstage by a choreographed all-women choir in metallic costumes, chamber instrumentation, a visual synthesizer, and the gameleste – a bespoke instrument designed by Björk herself. Serving as the venue, the Alexandra Palace in London which seats 10,000, enhances the modern and clinical aesthetics with its large and reflective space. This performance exudes a psychedelic and theatrical quality that surpasses her previous works. Later submitted to film festivals, this performance is curated with a typical cinematic three-act structure. The songs escalate in intensity through sound, lighting, and choreography. Biophilia remains her most playful and technologically ambitious project to date.
