The sad tale of Laodicea is a warning to all believers in these End Times. Are we allowing a mixture with the world, or are we letting God purify us? Laodicea message notes Today Laodicea is nothing but ruins -what went wrong? Jesus is the faithful, the amen, the true Jesus is the amen - not just a word at the end of prayers. It means totally faithful, dependable. Like a pillar, like a nursing mother, the word "verily verily" - totally dependable and wholehearted. His accusation is that Laodicea were not like him.... Jesus is the beginning of creation The reshit of creation B’reshit - in / through or for the first born creation was made... Know your works- neither hot nor cold Not about their love being hot or cold, but their works.... If we love God we keep his word. Loving god is obeying his commandments. Laodicea are keeping some and neglecting/ignoring many.... leaves a bad taste in God's mouth. Either be fully following me, or fully not. Reminder of pig - looks kosher but is not. When you keep some commandments it might look good, but God knows the heart and your true actions and is repulsed. I will spit you out - vomit you out of my mouth For you say you are rich Reference to hos 12:8 - speaking of backslidden kingdom of Israel who is speaking of its wealth that it has gained by stealth and false weights and is assuring itself that nobody knows. God says I know and is urging her back to himself. Laodicea is also following worlds ways of finances - tricking and being tricked - rather than honesty. Kingdom business mindset is different... Ie not tricking customer for huge profit. The church of Laodicea was positioned in a heavily resourced area. They lived comfortable lives. As a result, they became prideful in their ability to provide for themselves. So much so that when an earthquake destroyed their city in 60 AD they refused help from the Roman Empire insisting to pay for the rebuild themselves. This attitude of self-sufficiency spilled over into the church. They thought they were good to go, they had it all together. They say they are rich - not just think to themselves. They tell everyone that they are so good and don’t need anything. Not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked Samson did not realize when Gods spirit had left him. He had Gods spirit with him and had been so used to it - but sin dulled his senses and he did not know. Leprosy - don't know what you are doing and don't feel the pain anymore They think are rich and doing well, don’t know they are poor and naked. They don't know their own need nor do they hunger for God to fill them. Buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, Buy - theme in bible - foolish virgins buy oil matt 25:9, parable of man finding treasure in the field and buying it matt 13:44 Gold - Pure gold is incredibly durable. It's the most non-reactive of all metals: it won't react with oxygen or most chemicals, meaning it won't tarnish, rust or perish. This makes it perfect for use in jewellery and high status objects which are intended to retain their value and finish indefinitely. Gold may look pure - but when taken through the fire, impurities will come to the surface and be taken away. Ref ps 12:4-7 speaking of flattering lips and pretense, contrast gods word - refined 7 times taking all impurities out. It is not mixed. This is what they need, the impurities taken out, no more mixture. When you squeeze a lemon - what comes out? Greek scholar, Kenneth Wuest, provides a beautiful illustration of God’s refining fire. “The picture here is of an ancient goldsmith who puts his crude gold ore in a crucible, subjects it to intense heat, and thus liquefies the mass. The impurities rise to the surface and are skimmed off. When the metalworker is able to see the reflection of his face clearly mirrored in the surface of the liquid, he takes it off the fire, for he knows that the contents are pure gold. So it is with God and His child. He puts us in the crucible of Christian suffering, in which process sin is gradually put out of our lives, our faith is purified from the slag of unbelief that somehow mingles with it so often, and the result is the reflection of the face of Jesus Christ When He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold” (Job 23:10) Can they buy it? Is there a shortcut? No maturity involves a price to pay that they have to pay themselves. It involves giving up something seemingly costly - for what God has to offer which is of far more worth Confessing sin, letting go of it is costly - humiliating, hard - but is so so so worth it.
