Capturing Radiation?! / Mr. Denjiro's Happy Energy!

DENJIRO: Over the years, many scientists, such as Wilhelm Röntgen, Marie Curie, and Charles Thomson Rees Wilson have won the Nobel Prize in Physics for their studies in radiation. Today, I’ll perform an experiment where I’ll capture radiation, which we can’t see with our eyes. Take a look at this device. This is a homemade Geiger counter, which detects radiation. It was invented by Hans Geiger and Walther Müller. This plastic case here is the radiation detector. It’s connected to a cup that has static electricity store in it. This acts as the power source. First, I’m going to store static electricity in the cup. I’m going to place a radio here so we can tell that we’ve detected radiation. Now, I have here a mineral specimen known as uraninite, which emits a bit of radiation. I’m going to put it up to the case. GIRL: You can hear a static-like sound. DENJIRO: Sound is heard from the radio whenever I put the uraninite up to the case. That’s the sound of radiation from the mineral being detected. Let’s look at the mechanism behind how radiation is detected. This is what the inside of the plastic case looks like. It simply has an electrode standing in the middle. There are two copper wires coming out of the cup with static electricity. One wire is attached to the electrode in the center, and the other is attached to the case on the outside. The two wires are not connected to each other. When radiation enters the space in between, there is a small discharge, and a radio wave is emitted. The radio reacts to this radio wave, and that’s why we hear a sound. Actually, we can hear a bit of noise even if we don’t put the radiation-emitting mineral up to it. This is because the radio is detecting radiation from outer space, known as cosmic rays. It’s called background radiation, and although there is very little of it, it is always around us. NARRATION: Ever since X-rays were discovered over a hundred years ago, many scientists have studied radiation. As a result, radiation is currently used in many fields such as medicine, industry, and agriculture. I hope energy will bring you all happiness. Our magic word is "Happy Energy!"
