Join me for a 7 mile hike in the Mount Baker Wilderness. The hike starts at the Park Butte trail head and leads to great views of the Mount Baker and the Easton Glacier. The last 1/2 mile follows along the top of a lateral moraine. The run-off from the glacier can be seen in the valley below. The small animal that is seen on the rocks by the turn around point is a marmot. They live in alpine and sub-alpine rocky areas. Washington has 3 marmot species: the Olympic Marmot, found on the Olympic Peninsula; the Hoary Marmot and the Yellow- bellied Marmot. The Hoary Marmot lives at higher elevations, including 5,300 feet, so I think he was a Hoary Marmot. Yellow-bellied marmots tend to live at lower elevations. Marmots are known for their loud whistle which is an alert call that can often be heard even if the marmots are not seen! Thanks for watching- please leave a comment or question- I would enjoy hearing from you! General driving directions... (From I 5 in Burlington, WA, take Highway 20 east, then turn left onto Baker Lake Road, Continue about 12 miles, then turn left and follow the dirt road from another 9 miles.)
