Tara Kilbride of the Education Policy Innovation Collaborative (EPIC) explains what recent research shows about Michigan’s special education workforce. The findings are clear: special educator attrition is higher than in any other teaching area, and many schools across the state are struggling to fill these roles with fully certified professionals. The conversation also highlights a growing mismatch between the number of students with disabilities and the number of educators available to serve them. As student needs continue to grow, Michigan schools need more certified special educators and more flexible pathways that help educators earn the credentials needed to support students well. This interview also points to promising progress. Districts are expanding capacity by helping current teachers add special education endorsements, and statewide efforts like OPTIMISE are helping identify barriers, highlight urgent needs, and support solutions that strengthen the workforce serving individuals with disabilities, Birth to 26 years. #SpecialEducation #MichiganEducation #SpecialEducators #EducationWorkforce #OPTIMISE
