There are some places in this world that seem to have always been steeped in myth and legend, pervaded by a fog thhat somehow obscures them from our attempts to understand them. These are places perched on the periphery of our comprehension, teetering between what we know and what we don't, beyond us, perhaps always so, and imbued with hints of dark forces and ominous curses. Here we will take a tour of such places in the country of Spain, a place rich in history and where there seem to be plenty of locations that seem to keep their secrets close. Perched in the mountains of Tarragona, Northern Spain, surrounded by steep cliffs and picturesque scenery are the quaint, yet unassuming remains of the village of La Mussara. Once a thriving little enclave, at some time in the 1960s it was abandoned when the surrounding vineyards upon which the villagers based their livelihood died out and withered away from a disease, and were left behind to turn into a feral, weed choked collection of ruins. The exodus was apparently very sudden, and although the official version of events is that the death of the vineyards was the reason, there has long been talk that this place was cursed and pervaded by dark paranormal forces. One of the most pervasive legends about this place is that nothing will grow here and that crops are eternally doomed to wither and die here. Indeed, it has never been inhabited again and the vineyards are still little more than dusty, barren fields, but this is not the only misfortune to be found here. A pervasive rumor is that La Mussara is haunted by a fog that appears abruptly to cover the area in a blanket. While fog might seem spooky but harmless, the fog of La Mussara is said to hide within it a portal to another dimension, and that anyone caught in it will disappear forever. There are also said to be phantoms and shadow figures that can be seen moving about within this mist, as well as anomalous noises including weeping and screaming. Indeed, it is said that there have been many unexplained vanishings reported from here that have been attributed by superstitious locals to the mysterious fog. The monastery continued operations, but the countryside was from then on plagued by ghostly figures and noises, as well as famine and disease, leading the region to consider it cursed by the Devil. It would seem that the dark forces residing here were not finished yet, and there was another great tragedy that would hit here just after World War II. According to an account, in the late 1940s the bodies of several friars were discovered slaughtered and hung up on the hooks on the roof of the basement, very much in the same manner as the monks killed in the 17th century. The police allegedly went to the monastery to find a scared, wild-eyed monk hiding in a corner, confessing to the massacre, which he said had been “ordered by the Devil.” Shortly after this the monastery was completely abandoned and strange account of the paranormal have permeated the place ever since. It is said that the spirits of the murdered monks are still trapped inside the ruins, and have manifested themselves through spheres of light, whispers and apparitions, and there are numerous reports of strange noises, inexplicable temperature drops, and feelings of profound fear. Some reports have even told of seeing the Devil himself. Despite being little more than a crumbling husk, the monastery of "Huerta de San José" is still visited by ghost hunters and curiosity seekers, and the place is by all accounts absolutely crawling with weird paranormal stuff. It joins some of the many other mysterious places in Spain that have managed to elude understanding, and whether we ever really have answers to their secrets or not, it seems they will continue to exist out there in realms unknown, eluding any easy answers.
